Protect DC's Right To Heal (online) DC Initiative 81

November 3 is fast approaching! We are now gearing up to educate and inform as many DC voters as possible about Initiative 81. Today we are reaching out with a small request: can you email your Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and ask about having a representative from the Campaign speak at an upcoming ANC meeting?

For those of you who don’t know, an ANC is a non-partisan, neighborhood body made up of locally elected representatives called Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners represent between 2,000 and 3,000 citizens within their “Single Member District.” Altogether, there are 40 ANCs across all 8 Wards, which are comprised of 296 individual Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. If DC had a bicameral legislature, ANCs would be like our House of Representatives and the Councilmembers would be our Senate.

So on top of your Ward-level Councilmember, your four At-Large Councilmembers, your DC Council Chairman, and the Mayor, you also have an ANC Commissioner who represents you at the neighborhood level. Every ANC meets once a month to discuss matters like alcohol licenses, zoning changes, and others matters of importance to the hyperlocal community.

This is where you come in. We are asking supporters to reach out to their Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and ask for 10 minutes of time at an upcoming ANC ZOOM meeting to allow either yourself or a representative of the Campaign to speak about Initiative 81.

Simply email with your address and the Campaign’s community outreach liaison will provide you with a sample email for you to use and the correct email address to send the request. If you have already contacted your ANC, please tell us so we can keep track of the community outreach. Altogether, it will take less than 5 minutes to make the request.

If your ANC will not provide the Campaign time during the meeting, that’s okay! Everyone is given 3 minutes at the end of every meeting to speak, and you or the Campaign representative can speak then. But we would prefer to speak for a larger amount of time as well as potentially receive an endorsement from the entire Advisory Neighborhood Commission.

This type of public-facing outreach to the community will help inform and educate more voters about Initiative 81 and we really hope you’ll be able to help! It’s a small request that can make a big impact!
