The Harris Rider could be removed tonight!
Tonight the House of Representatives is holding the Fiscal Year 2020 Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee Markup at 7pm in Room HT-2 in the U.S. Capitol.
With the Democrats finally back in control of the U.S. House of Representatives, we are told that tyrannical Harris Rider, which prevents the DC government from taxing & regulating cannabis, may finally be removed from the federal budget from the District of Columbia.
This markup vote is the first step in the process of approving the federal budget for the District of Columbia; next the budget will go to the full Appropriations Committee and finally be voted on by the entire House of Representatives.
Before going to the president’s desk for his signature, the Senate’s appropriations bill will also need to be passed, but in the past the Senate has kept a more hands-off approach to DC. If Congress passes a clean budget (aka no Harris Rider) for the District of Columbia on time, then starting October 1, 2019, the DC Council will be free to pass any legislation concern cannabis reform. We have waited over 4 years for this!
STAY TUNED! Adam will be onsite tonight to monitor tonight’s Markup vote. It will likely be in a small room where very few DCMJ members will be able to get seats. Check our Twitter Feed for the latest information concerning this important vote. We encourage you to watch the hearing via the the subcommittee’s Live Stream.
IMPORTANT: We will need DCMJ members to get their Liberty Caps ready and attend the full Appropriations Committee hearing. At this hearing we expect Republicans, like Rep. Andy Harris, to attempt to add tyrannical amendments to the appropriations bill and we want members of Congress to see us. This vote may come as early as this week. We will send out an emergency email blast when we know the details!
